Talking to the wall

by Jason Catizone on 04/08/24

"It's like talking to the wall!"

This phrase means that talking to a certain person or group of people is not productive - they, just like a wall, do not listen, and do not respond.

For instance, when you were a child your mother may have told you time and time again to clean up your room and not leave dirty clothes on the floor. But you didn’t listen, even though she told you the same thing countless times. And so, your mom may have felt that talking to you at times was as productive as talking to a wall.

Conversation Example:

Charlotte: I told you 50 times already to quit leaving your dirty dishes in the sink!

Nick: I’m sorry! I was late for work, so I just left them there.

Charlotte: Talking to you is like talking to the wall!

  1. Think of two scenarios where you could use this kind of phrase.

  2. Related vocabulary words: inattentive, distracted.

  3. Write three sentences using the word ‘inattentive,’ and three using ‘distracted.’
